Qld: Police commissioner to meet union officials
Queensland Police Commissioner BOB ATKINSON will meet union officials today to try
to sort out a row over security for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Premier PETER BEATTIE has told the Queensland Police Union to butt out after it accused
him of compromising security for the meeting.
Police union president GARY WILKINSON says Mr BEATTIE is placing police in danger with
a series of revelations about security at CHOGM in October.
But Mr BEATTIE says he will not be stood over by the police union, any other organisation
or person.
He says the sooner they butt out and let the government run the show the better.
Mr ATKINSON says Mr BEATTIE has not revealed any secrets or put officers at risk.
He says the police policy and strategy has always been to send a very clear message
that police are able to meet and manage any incident that may occur in Brisbane during
CHOGM.
He says the premier has done no more than reinforce what police authorities have been
doing in that regard.
