NSW: Protestors arrested for trespass

SYDNEY, Dec 17 AAP - More than 20 protesters were arrested after storming the Lucas
Heights nuclear reactor in southern Sydney today.

One group of the demonstrators burst through the front gates of the facility while
three other groups scaled fences, prompting major security fears.

Two truckloads of Greenpeace protesters made their way into the southern Sydney site
through the front gate about 7.30am (AEDT) after blocking the entrance with a four-wheel-drive.

At the same time, unbeknown to security officers, another three teams of protesters
were scaling perimeter fences in separate areas of the facility.

Greenpeace said the activists were protesting against the safety of the proposed replacement
nuclear reactor for Lucas Heights.

According to a Greenpeace spokesman, 24 protesters were arrested and were to be charged
with trespass.

It was not clear whether any more arrests were likely to be made.
