Distant Lover by Gloria Mallette Dafina Books/Kensington Publishing, October 2004, $24, ISBN 0-758-20471 -X
As Mallette's sixth novel opens, readers meet Tandi Crawford, a woman whose husband, Jared, has been unfaithful. Their 15-year marriage is now in deep trouble. Tandi begins to long for her high-school lover, who just so happens to turn up later in the story. In the meantime, Tandi moves with her son back to her father's house.
Eventually, Tandis husband realizes that he does not want to lose her. Their son also does not want his parents to get divorced and Tandi begins to realize that she still has deep feelings for Jared.
With so many major issues revolving around Tandi, several characters are not fleshed out very well and unfortunately come across as stereotypes. Nevertheless, Mallette's numerous fans will be entertained as they read along to see how these major conflicts in Tandi's life are resolved. The book's last scenes are surprisingly satisfying and tender.
