FED: Hasty independence poses problems for Aust: Howard 2

East Timor has been under Indonesian rule since troops entered the former Portuguese colony
in late 1975.

Mr HOWARD has urged the East Timorese and Indonesians to think very hard about the
implications of a speedy grant of independence.





Indonesian President BJ HABIBIE has said he wants to see a free East Timor by January 1 and
rid Indonesia of the burden it poses.
